HYUNDAI WIA showcased mobility-based artillery systems at the largest defense exhibition in Southeast Asia.
On June 12th, HYUNDAI WIA announced that the company is participating in the 'INDO Defence 2024 Expo & Forum' held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The INDO Defence exhibition taking place from the 11th to the 14th(WIB) is the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, and an international event attended by defense personnel from various countries including major Asian nations. This is the first time HYUNDAI WIA has participated in a defense exhibition held in the Southeast Asia region.
At this exhibition, HYUNDAI WIA showcased its mobility-based artillery systems with several mockups, with the "Lightweight 105mm Self-Propelled Howitzer" being a prime example. Developed through the Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute Rapid R&D project, this self-propelled howitzer boasts significant improvements in range and mobility compared to its predecessor. The maximum range is 18 km, and the design was intended to be mounted on a lightweight tactical vehicle capable of reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h by reducing more than half the original weight. Air transportation can be supported by large helicopters. The Korean military is conducting trials for deployment, with evaluations set to conclude later this month.

HYUNDAI WIA also introduced the 'AI-based Intelligent Remote Control Weapon System (RCWS)', which can be installed on various vehicles. The RCWS is a weapon system that allows the operator to monitor battlefield situations from inside the vehicle via display and to fire remotely. HYUNDAI WIA designed this weapon system to accommodate a 7.62mm machine gun and a 5.56mm rifle, equipping it with an AI-based automatic tracking algorithm that drastically improves firing accuracy. HYUNDAI WIA has already met the deployment requirements for RCWS through a rapid demonstration project.
HYUNDAI WIA also showcased the 'Vehicle-mounted 81mm Mortar.' This system improves operational convenience and combat readiness by mounting the mortar on a vehicle, reducing the laying time from 5 minutes to under 10 seconds, and decreasing the number of operators from 5 to 3. For areas difficult to access by vehicle, the mortar can be dismounted and operated in the same manner as the conventional mortar.
HYUNDAI WIA plans to leverage its past export experience in Southeast Asia to strengthen its presence in the market. Between 2009 and 2015, HYUNDAI WIA exported 54 units of the 105mm towed howitzer and 18 units of the 155mm towed howitzers to Indonesia. "INDO Defence 2024 is deeply significant as the first exhibition where we are introducing HYUNDAI WIA’s defense systems in the Southeast Asian region," adding, "We will showcase our defense technology through mobililty-based weapon systems founded on mobility and operational expertise," said an official from HYUNDAI WIA.
