HYUNDAI WIA has successfully increased the overseas orders from automakers in the previous year by utilizing its mechanical engineering technology.

On January 24th, HYUNDAI WIA announced that it had secured orders worth KRW 1.45 trillion for constant velocity joints from European and North American automakers during the year of 2023. The company was able to lay the foundation for the possibility of expanding the market base to overseas automakers through this achievement. Constant velocity joints are crucial automotive components that transmit power from a motor or engine to the wheels of a car.

Securing superior technology in constant velocity joint based on the mechanical engineering technology played a pivotal role in signing the large-scale orders from international car manufacturers. This mechanical engineering technology is a crucial competence for transmitting power from the motor or engine to the wheels with minimal loss while also minimizing vibrations and noise during driving. HYUNDAI WIA has been advancing the constant velocity joints by utilizing these technologies.

HYUNDAI WIA has minimized the Noise-Vibration-Harshness (NVH) of actual constant velocity joints while significantly reducing their weight. Constant velocity joints specialized for electric vehicles were also developed with high-efficient and low-vibration capabilities. In addition, HYUNDAI WIA is actively responding to various customer needs by developing constant velocity joints for ultra-large vehicles.

"Our expertise in developing constant velocity joints has allowed us to produce high-quality products. By minimizing NVH and creating lightweight components, we could fulfill over 90% of our orders for eco-friendly vehicles,” said an official from HYUNDAI WIA.

HYUNDAI WIA has developed the IDA-Integrated Drive Axle, which is an advanced version of the conventional constant velocity joint. It combines the drive shaft, which transmits power to the wheels, and the wheel bearing that connects the shaft to the wheels into one product, thus reducing the weight and increasing the rigidity of the components. This results in a significant improvement in the vehicle's driving performance. The IDA is currently used in Hyundai Motor's Ioniq 5 and Kia Motor's EV6.

The fact that HYUNDAI WIA has been mass-producing the constant velocity joints over 30 years has also positively impacted in securing a large volume of order. Since 1988, the company has been manufacturing constant velocity joints and has raised its quality to the highest level in the world. In 2017, HYUNDAI WIA surpassed 100 million constant velocity joints in cumulative production, becoming the first domestic auto parts manufacturing company to achieve this milestone. The recent production volume is rapidly increasing. In 2019, HYUNDAI WIA produced 11.44 million constant velocity joints per year, which increased to 13.12 million last year.

HYUNDAI WIA also minimized logistics costs through utilizing global production bases. The company produces more than 5 million constant velocity joints annually through overseas production sites, including JIANGSU HYUNDAI WIA, HYUNDAI WIA INDIA, and HYUNDAI WIA MEXICO. HYUNDAI WIA plans to actively utilize its global production base to efficiently deliver constant velocity joints and better provide technical support.

HYUNDAI WIA aims to expand its orders for automotive parts through technology development. “Our long-standing expertise in mechanical technology and mass-production of constant velocity joints allowed us to win large-scale orders. We plan to continue our efforts to create top-quality mobility parts through active research and development, and strive to be the best in the world,” said an official from HYUNDAI WIA.
