HYUNDAI WIA has been recognized for its sustainability performance by a global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) rating agency.
On February 18th, HYUNDAI WIA announced that the company was awarded a “Gold” rating by “EcoVadis” for its ESG management. EcoVadis is a global ESG rating agency that evaluates more than 100,000 companies in 175 countries across four criteria: environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and procurement. The Gold rating HYUNDAI WIA received is only awarded to companies that score in the top 5% of the evaluation results. This was an important milestone as the company improved its rating from Silver last year to Gold this year. The evaluation results generated from EcoVadis are utilized by many global automakers as an indicator for judging their supply chains.
HYUNDAI WIA was also recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) on the 13th, a global sustainability assessment organization, by receiving an “A- Leadership” rating in the CDP Climate Change Response Assessment 2023. In addition, the company was also recognized as a “Carbon Management Sector Honoree,” which is awarded to the top four companies in the consumer discretionary sector. CDP annually evaluates more than 13,000 companies around the world on how they are addressing climate change.
HYUNDAI WIA has been recognized for its multifaceted efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The company joined the RE100 program to join the movement of converting the electricity consumed to 100% renewable energy and has set a goal to achieve this by 2045. In addition, the company is actively reducing GHG emissions by improving its internal energy management system and replacing old boilers and compressors with energy-efficient products. Through these efforts, HYUNDAI WIA reduced GHG emissions by 19,280 tons of CO2eq in 2022 compared to its target.
In addition, the company received a high score in labor human rights with continuous efforts to foster a safer and healthier environment for all employees. In December last year, HYUNDAI WIA was also selected as a health-friendly company by the Korea Health Promotion Institute. As part of the effort, the company regularly conducts safety risk assessment and related training, runs a grievance handling system within the company, and conducts training on discrimination and harassment prevention.
HYUNDAI WIA is also working to strengthen the sustainable management of its suppliers. To improve suppliers’ competitiveness, the company conducts ESG assessments and provides training and consultants. Last year, a total of 214 suppliers were subjected to the ESG assessments.
As international interest and demand for ESG management exponentially grows, the company plans to further expand related activities. "We are very pleased to be recognized for our sustainable management activities by a highly credible global ESG rating agency." "We will strive to become a company where all employees can care for the environment and grow together with our stakeholders," said an official from HYUNDAI WIA.
