On November 22, HYUNDAI WIA announced that the company held an opening ceremony on the 22nd to designate Changwon Seongmin Girl’s High School, located at Uichang-gu, Changwon Special City, Gyeongsangnam-do, as ‘HYUNDAI WIA Green School’. This particular program involves creating ecological spaces on school grounds by planting trees and flowers, enabling students to grow alongside nature. HYUNDAI WIA collaborated on this project with the organization that values nature, the Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education.
HYUNDAI WIA transformed approximately 455㎡ (about 462.81m2) of the school rooftop at Changwon Seongmin Girls’ High School into a little forest, naming it the "Starlight Garden" to symbolize a space where students can dream and share their aspirations under the stars. The Starlight Garden features 470 trees, including oriental arborvitae, green maple, and over 2,200 flowering plants. Notably, more than 60 species of flowers and plants were planted, including endangered species such as the aquatic liverwort and cowbane, creating a space dedicated to preserving biodiversity.
HYUNDAI WIA also encouraged Changwon Seongmin Girls' High School students to actively take part in designing and planting the Starlight Garden. The company held lectures and workshops on the rooftop garden to support this so the students could freely share their ideas. The students decided how to utilize the rooftop and contributed to the design of various facilities. They could also take part in putting collision-prevention films on the glass railings on the rooftop to protect birds from crashing.
The Starlight Garden was designed by HYUNDAI WIA to essentially provide a space where students can ease their minds and stress from their studies. The Garden includes a wetland ecosystem area for observing endangered and wetland plants, a grassland ecosystem area featuring a mix of flowering plants and shrubs, a community space for students to relax, and a scenic viewpoint for enjoying the views of the surrounding school areas.
HYUNDAI WIA plans to continuously provide support to help students take the lead in preserving and managing the Starlight Garden. Additionally, the company aims to promote the Green School Program to expand the ecosystem of endangered plant species and establish an ecological network between the Green Schools. In fact, some endangered species from Gwangju Wolgok Middle School (designated as Green School last year) have been given to Changwon Seongmin Girl’s High School.
HYUNDAI WIA is committed to improving the local environment so students can grow into healthy young adults in clean air. “We are delighted to provide a healthy educational environment that harmonizes with nature for the Changwon Seongmin Girls High School students through this Green School project, and we plan to continue to enhance our environmental conservation and ESG management efforts through diverse social contribution activities,” said an official from HYUNDAI WIA.
