HYUNDAI WIA has completed development of the naval gun system for the CIWS-II (Close In Weapon System).
On November 13th, HYUNDAI WIA announced that an unveiling ceremony for the CIWS-II naval gun system was held on the 12th at the company’s naval systems assembly facility located in Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Representatives from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), Republic of Korea Navy Headquarters (ROKN HQ), Agency for Defense Development (ADD), Defense Agency for Technology and Quality (DTaQ), Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute (DRATRI), and executives from suppliers attended the event.
As the last line of defense for battleships, CIWS-II detects and tracks approaching threats such as fighter jets, anti-ship missiles, and high-speed vessels via integrated sensors and radars and engages with rapid-fire. HYUNDAI WIA developed the naval gun system including firing and motor drive for CIWS-II. The exhibited naval gun system will be delivered to LIG Nex 1 for system integration. The final system will be inducted on ROKN battleships currently in deployment.
The CIWS-II naval gun system was developed by HYUNDAI WIA in two segments: the gun turret, and the gun turret controller. The gun turret is equipped with a 30mm gatling gun with a maximum rate of fire exceeding 4,000 rounds per minute. The gun turret was designed specifically to effectively engage rapidly incoming threats such as anti-ship missiles and surface vessels. HYUNDAI WIA further reinforced the survivability of battleships by adapting the turret system to support a variety of dedicated ammunition including the MPDS (Missile Piercing Discarding Sabot) and FMPDS (Frangible Missile Piercing Discarding Sabot).
The gun turret controller functions to operate the motor drive and remote control of the gun turret. The gun turret can rotate 360 degrees and the elevation can be set between 20˚~+80˚ per controls, enabling immediate engagement of targets. The gun turret controller also has a function to self-monitor the real time status of the naval gun system and check for abnormalities.
HYUNDAI WIA will commence mass production of the unveiled CIWS-II naval gun system in March 2028 for consecutive delivery to the ROK Navy. The CIWS-II naval gun system will be deployed on next generation battleships such as the KDDX and the Chungnam-class FFX Batch-III frigates.
HYUNDAI WIA is preparing for the successful mass production of the CIWS-II naval gun system, drawing on accumulated expertise and technological capabilities acquired through the local production of 5” naval guns and development of the 76mm naval gun. A representative from HYUNDAI WIA stated that “the development was successfully completed by building upon on our long-standing experience of manufacturing naval guns and accumulated technological capabilities” and that “HYUNDAI WIA will continue to expand our defense capabilities across land, naval, and aerospace systems through innovations in quality and technological advancements.”
