HYUNDAI WIA Hosts Parking Solution Customer Event. Accelerating the Adoption of Parking Robots in Multi-Family Housing Complexes

HYUNDAI WIA is providing guidelines for deploying parking robots in multi-family housing complexes and accelerating the expansion of its parking robot business.

On August 20, HYUNDAI WIA announced that it hosted the ‘Parking Solution Customer Invitation Event’ for two days, from August 19 to 20 at Hyundai Motor Group’s Uiwang R&D Center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province. The company organized this event for the first time to showcase HYUNDAI WIA’s parking robot technology and the architectural design and permitting approaches required to deploy the robots in multi-family housing complexes. Approximately 800 major customers from construction companies and contractors interested in parking robot solutions attended the event.

HYUNDAI WIA organized this event to proactively respond to the expanding market following the recent establishment of a regulatory framework for deploying parking robots in apartment complexes. In July, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport successively revised the Enforcement Rules of the Parking Lot Act and the Rules on Housing Construction Standards, etc., officially recognizing parking robots as mechanical parking systems permitting their installation in multi-family housing complexes. As a result, dedicated parking facilities for parking robots can now be designed, while parking space dimensions can be optimized for parking robot operations.

HYUNDAI WIA structured the event around a Parking robot demonstration and a Seminar, enabling customers to see how the robots operate and explore potential applications. The demonstration featured a range of scenarios, including ▲vehicle entry/exit, ▲perpendicular, parallel, and double parking, ▲vehicle repositioning, and ▲responses to unexpected situations. It addressed parking robot implementation methods in seminar. It also introduced architectural design considerations such as infrastructure requirements and parking space layouts to enhance efficiency. In addition, the company presented related regulations, deployment approaches for new and existing project sites, and comparisons of construction costs between conventional self-parking facilities and parking robot facilities.

HYUNDAI WIA’s parking robot operates in pairs, with two robots working together as one set; the robots enter underneath a vehicle, lift its wheels, and transport it to the designated location. Equipped with LiDAR sensors, the robots accurately identify the size and position of a vehicle’s wheels and can transport SUVs weighing up to 3.4 tons. The robots are designed with a height of 110 mm to accommodate vehicles with low ground clearance. Deploying parking robots can reduce the space required for opening and closing vehicle doors while enabling double and triple parking arrangements. Accordingly, parking capacity can be increased by at least 20% to 50% compared with conventional self-parking facilities.

HYUNDAI WIA has accumulated experience in operating parking robots at manufacturing sites and private facilities. Since first supplying parking robots to Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) in November 2023, and HYUNDAI WIA has subsequently expanded deployments to Hyundai Motor Group’s Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) plant and Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in the U.S., as well as Hyundai Motor’s new GP plant in Ulsan. The company has also demonstrated the applicability of its parking robots at private facilities, including HMG headquarters and Factorial Seongsu, in Seoul.

Based on this accumulated experience, HYUNDAI WIA is also accelerating deployment in multi-family housing complex. HYUNDAI WIA is conducting Korea’s first parking robot pilot project at Hillstate the Wave City in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province through a consortium with Hyundai Motor and Hyundai E&C. The company aims to verify the operational reliability, parking efficiency, and user convenience of parking robots in a real-world multi-family housing environment.

“We organized this event for customers to provide our customers an opportunity to see how our parking robots operate and how they can be deployed in practice, following the establishment of the regulatory framework for the installation in multi-family housing complexes. We will continue to provide parking robot solutions optimized for a wide range of spaces including multi-family housing complexes, transportation hubs, and public facilities,” said an official from HYUNDAI WIA.
